Woven Hearts Affectionately known in Scandinavia as "julehjerter", the whimsical paper woven hearts have a romantic history. The Danish fairytale writer – Hans Christian Andersen - created the very first woven heart in the mid 1800s. This original woven heart still exists today, exhibited in its home country for all to see; reminding us of the power of love.
Until Ugly Duckli took up commercial production in 2002, of the woven hearts, the tradition of making woven hearts at home was very much a Scandinavian secret. Families in Scandinavia would sit down and weave these lovely paper hearts in the days leading up to Christmas. The woven hearts would then be hung up on their Christmas trees, with some bearing gifts of candies or cookies to surprise their children.
We at Ugly Duckli have taken the traditional woven heart concept and expanded it even further. Our woven hearts now come in a variety of materials (e.g. the original glazed paper or glanspapir, natural sustainable wood and high quality brass), as well as shapes (e.g. 2D or 3D). We have even incorporated a few original designs of our own, to offer our valuable clients. For those who enjoy making things with their hands, we recommend our fun-filled, award-winning DIY heart weaving kit, with cutouts and full, easy-to-follow instructions.
The uses for these woven hearts are limitless. Some suggestions are to send them as cards for various occasions (birthdays, Valentine’s Day, wedding invitations, bridal showers, baby showers, etc), to hang them as ornaments, to hold small gifts, and to market products with love messages (*see below for some suggestions).
Today, Ugly Duckli is still the only company who specializes in the manufacture of these woven hearts. We are proud to be awarded the prestigious Formland Prize, for best new product design at the largest gift show in Scandinavia.
*Suggestions of messages: • From my heart to yours • Say it with your heart • From the bottom of my woven heart • Give your heart away • Thank you for your heartfelt gift • …it was heart-ly necessary • Spread the weave of love • Spread the weave of romance
All woven heart design and manufacturing projects are coordinated from Copenhagen, Denmark.
